Damn, I sure wish I had a man who talked to me like that. But wait! I do have one: he lives on my Ipad. All I have to do is put on my headphones give myself over to his voice. (Actually, I have several. It's a mountain on which I will gladly die.)
It feels like a relationship because it is. Researchers call it a parasocial relationship: one where a person feels as if they actually know a performer. In the case of erotic (and many other) voice actors (VAs), performances for an audience of many are received by an individual as if it was directed to them. As it turns out, these relationships tend to be quite beneficial; they provide a level of safety that can be elusive in real-life social situations and relationships.
There are casual listeners, of course, for whom the relationship might be occasional or even a one-off. Others are “regulars” and tune in often/daily. In either case, a good VA respects and nurtures the relationship, understanding and respecting its boundaries. Failing to do so changes it into a different type of relationship and, frankly, it doesn’t usually turn out well.
The single most important thing about erotic audio is that each listener finds creators and content that resonate with them. (Saying it loud for the folks in the back.)
